How X counts characters

X doesn't count characters the way a word processor does. It gives each character a weight, and the limit of 280 applies to the weighted total. That's why a post can look short and still be rejected.

What you typeCounts as
Latin letters, digits, spaces, most punctuation1 each
Accented letters, Greek, Cyrillic, Hebrew, Arabic, Hindi1 each
Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters2 each
An emoji, including skin tones, flags and combined emoji2
Any link, however long23
Line breaks1 each

Links count as 23 because X wraps every URL in its t.co shortener. A 90-character link and a 12-character link cost the same. Emoji built from several code points, like a family or a flag, still count as one emoji.

What the limit is and who it applies to

Standard X accounts get 280 weighted characters per post. Premium subscribers can post much longer, but the feed still cuts long posts off with a "Show more" link, so the first 280 characters do most of the work either way.

Each tweet in a thread has its own 280. When a post won't fit, split it at a natural break with the thread splitter instead of cutting words you need. The X character limit guide covers the rules in more detail, including handles, replies and images.

Making a post fit without losing the point

  • Cut the warm-up. The first sentence is often throat-clearing; the second is the real opener.
  • Swap phrases for words: "in order to" becomes "to", "at this point in time" becomes "now".
  • Drop a link you don't need. It costs 23 characters, and links in posts are widely reported to get less reach.
  • Use digits: "3 tips" is shorter than "three tips" and easier to scan.
  • If two ideas are fighting for space, post one now and save the other.
