Thread splitter

Paste a long draft and get a thread back: every tweet under 280 characters, split at sentences where possible and words where not. Edit any tweet, then copy one or all.

  1. 01

Paste your long text: a blog post, notes, or a draft that ran over.

  2. 02

Choose whether to add 1/n numbering. Room for it is reserved in every tweet.

  3. 03

Edit any tweet in place, then copy it on its own or copy the whole thread.

How the splitter decides where to break

  1. Paragraph breaks and line breaks in your text are kept where they fit inside a tweet.
  2. Sentences are packed into each tweet until the next one would push it past 280.
  3. A sentence that is too long on its own is split between words.
  4. With numbering on, the " 1/8" suffix is counted before packing, so no tweet goes over once it's added.

Counts use X's weighting, so links count as 23 and emoji as 2, the same as the character counter.

From split text to a thread people finish

A mechanical split gets you under the limit. It doesn't make a thread. Before you post, give it three passes.

  • Rewrite the first tweet as a hook. It's the only one most people see. Say what the reader gets from the thread.
  • Make each tweet stand alone. A tweet that starts mid-sentence reads badly when it's quoted or shared on its own.
  • End with a clear close. A summary, a takeaway, or one question for replies.

We cut our onboarding from 9 steps to 3 and trial-to-paid went up. Here's what we removed, and what we were scared to remove but did anyway. 1/6

Should you number your tweets?

Numbering tells readers how long the thread is and where they are in it, which helps on longer threads. It costs a few characters per tweet and can look formal on a short, casual thread. A reasonable rule: number threads of five tweets or more, skip it on two or three.
