Bold and italic text for X

X has no formatting buttons for regular posts. Type your text and copy it back in bold, italic, monospace, script, strikethrough or underline, built from Unicode characters.

These are math and combining characters, not real formatting. Screen readers may read them letter by letter or skip them, and search on X may not match them. Use them for a word or two, never for a whole post.

  1. 01

Type the word or phrase you want to style.

  2. 02

Find the style you want in the list. Each shows what it costs in X characters.

  3. 03

Copy it and paste it into your post, reply or bio.

How Unicode text styles work

These styles aren't formatting. Unicode includes a set of mathematical letters, bold A to Z, italic A to Z and so on, meant for equations. This tool swaps each letter of your text for its styled twin, so the style travels anywhere plain text does: posts, replies, bios and display names.

Strikethrough and underline work differently. They add a combining mark after each character that draws a line through or under it. How clean the line looks depends on the font of whoever is reading.

Accessibility: use styled text sparingly

Screen readers see these characters as math symbols, not words. Depending on the reader, a bold word can be read out letter by letter as "mathematical bold capital" and so on, or skipped. Styled text also may not match in X search, so a styled keyword can be harder to find.

  • Style a word or a short label, never a whole post.
  • Keep names, keywords and anything people might search for in plain text.
  • Don't put the only copy of important information in a styled line.

Where styled text helps

Used lightly, a styled word works as a signpost. A bold label at the top of a post ("New:", "Lesson 3:"), a monospace command in a developer tip, or a struck-through old price next to a new one. In a bio, a single styled word can mark a section. The bio guide has more on what to put there.
