Unpopular opinion tweet template
A good unpopular opinion gets people talking because it's specific and defensible. This template pairs the take with the reasoning, so replies argue with your point instead of you.
The template
Unpopular opinion: [your take, stated plainly]. [The reason, in one or two sentences, ideally from your own experience.] [What you'd do instead.]
When to use it
- You disagree with common advice in your field and can explain why.
- You want to start a conversation and get replies.
- You have experience that contradicts what most people say.
Why it works
The label
"Unpopular opinion:" signals a take is coming and invites people to agree or push back.
A plain take
State it clearly and specifically. Hedged opinions don't start conversations.
The reason
This separates a useful take from rage bait. A reason from experience gives people something real to discuss.
The alternative
Saying what you'd do instead makes the tweet useful, even to people who disagree.

Unpopular opinion: you don't need a waitlist before you launch. Our waitlist had 2,000 emails and converted 11 customers. The 30 people I talked to directly converted 9. Skip the landing page. Talk to 30 people.

Unpopular opinion: most beginners shouldn't follow a workout split. Training each muscle once a week is too little practice when you're learning the moves. Do three full-body sessions a week for the first six months.

Unpopular opinion: daily standups are a status report for the manager, not help for the team. I cut ours to twice a week and nobody missed the other three. Write updates async. Meet when someone is blocked.
Tips
- Only post takes you'd defend in the replies. If you can't explain it, it's bait.
- Make it specific to your field. "Coffee is overrated" is noise; a take about your craft builds authority.
- Reply to thoughtful disagreement. Replies are an engagement signal on X, and good-faith debates help the post travel.
- Extudio's Compose has an "Unpopular opinion:" opener to start a draft in this format.
