The sizes, and where each one goes
| Preset | Pixels | Ratio | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| In-feed landscape | 1600 × 900 | 16:9 | A single image in a post |
| Square | 1080 × 1080 | 1:1 | Quote cards, graphics with text, product shots |
| Portrait | 1080 × 1350 | 4:5 | Tall posts that take more of the feed on phones |
| Header | 1500 × 500 | 3:1 | The banner at the top of your profile |
| Profile photo | 400 × 400 | 1:1 | Your avatar; X shows it as a circle |
X crops previews in the feed differently on phones and desktop, and has changed how it crops over the years. The X image sizes guide goes through each placement and what gets cut.
Fill and crop, or fit inside?
Fill and crop scales the image until it covers the whole frame and trims the edges that stick out, keeping the center. Use it for photos where the subject sits in the middle.
Fit inside scales the image until the whole thing is visible and fills the gaps with your background color. Use it for screenshots, charts and anything with text near the edges, where a crop would cut off something that matters.
JPEG or PNG?
Use JPEG for photos: smaller files, no visible difference. Use PNG for screenshots, text and flat graphics, where JPEG compression can blur sharp edges. X recompresses uploads either way, so starting from the right size gives it less to do.
