Feature update tweet template

Users don't care that you shipped a feature. They care what it lets them do. This template leads with the benefit and keeps the changelog details short.

The template

  1. New in [product]: you can now [benefit in plain words]. [What changed, in one line.] [How to use it: where to find it, one step.] [Optional: "Thanks to everyone who asked for this."]

When to use it

  • You shipped something users asked for and want them to know.
  • You post regular product updates and want a consistent format.
  • You want to bring back users who left because the feature was missing.

Why it works

Benefit first

"You can now..." frames the update around what users get. It's more interesting than the name of the feature.

What changed

One line of detail for people who want to know exactly what's different.

How to use it

Telling people where to find it turns a reader into a user right away.

The thanks

Crediting the people who asked shows you listen, which gets more feature requests and more loyal users.

New in Shiftboard: you can now let staff swap shifts without asking a manager. Swaps between people with the same role are approved automatically. Turn it on in Settings > Scheduling. Thanks to everyone who asked for this. It was our top request.

New in Tabstack: you can now search inside saved sessions. Type any word from a page title and find the session it's in, even from months ago. Press Cmd+K anywhere in the app. Thanks to everyone who asked for this.

New for students: you can now download lessons and watch them offline. Every video has a download button under the player. Great for flights and bad Wi-Fi. Thanks to everyone who asked for this, especially the commuters.

Tips

  • Attach a short screen recording of the feature in use. It explains faster than text.
  • Reply to the people who originally requested it with a link to the tweet.
  • Batch small updates into a weekly roundup instead of tweeting each one.
  • For a bigger release, write a build in public update with the story behind it.
